1/29
Bonnie's account of her first race of the season can be read here.

1/28

Today the season has begun, and our boys attended the first race of the season as a full squad (9 riders).  Though they were active in most of the day's action, and were set up for a terrific leadout, the race conditions prevented another '3 in the top 5' scenario, and the team began the year with 13th (Aaron Quesnell) and 16th (Randall Coxworth) places.  It's only the first race, and all are pleased with the team 's performance, racing alongside professionals from T-Mobile, Jittery Joe's, Kodak-Sierra Nevada, and Successful Living.  As for the women, Bonnie Bourque was the sole representative of the Women's Elite team, and rode to a fine 4th place finish.  Good job Bonnie!

February News

2/25
As a preamble to the final stage of the Tour of California, the men's team participated in the Long Beach Shoreline Circuit Race.  The race was fast from the gun, and a field sprint was inevitable.  In the end, our boys placed 6th (Randall Coxworth), 8th (Nick Onate), 9th (Andy Wilson) and 14th (Aaron Quesnell).  Four in the top 15 was a commendable result, considering the team tried desperately to keep their leadout train together to the end.  Good job guys.

2/24
Nick Onate has sent in his recount of the Costa Mesa Criterium, which can be read here.

2/23

See the final sprint finish at the Valley of the Sun Stage Race, where Anna Lang scored an impressive win against some of the country's best female cyclists. Congratulations Anna!

2/19
The final day of the Valley of the Sun stage race produced some great results, with newly upgraded to a category 2, Anna Lang, scoring an incredible victory in the Women's 1-2 criterium!  Great job Anna!  In the Pro Men's final stage, Randall Coxworth took 6th place (best amateur), ending a tough weekend in Phoenix on a positive note.  Final results and reports from the stage race will be available soon.

While most of the team was in Arizona, Nick Onate and Drew Salcedo represented the team colors in the Costa Mesa Criterium (CBR), with Nick taking 8th place in the event.

2/16

2/11
Today, six riders from the men's team took the line at the Roger Millikan Memorial.  They faced a strong field that contained riders from Discovery, Toyota United, and Health Net, in addition to the strong local riders.  The race was fast and nothing was allowed to stay away.  In the end, Toyota set up their man Ivan Dominguez, who won the race.  Andy Wilson managed 14th place.  The women had another great day out, placing two in the top five, with Katharine Lundby 2nd, and Bonnie Bourque 5th.  More details to come.

2/11
Katharine has submitted her race report for the Boulevard Road Race.  You can read her report here.

Another top 5 for the women; a tough day for the men.  Bonnie Bourque placed 4th today at the Imperial Classic, while the men tried desperately to find the perfect breakaway combination, but only managed 8th place.  That's racing!  Next up, a full squad will compete tomorrow in the Roger Millikan Memorial.  Stay tuned for results.

Quesnell Wins Masters 30+; Lang wins 2!  It was quite an exciting day of racing at the Red Trolley Criterium this Super Bowl Sunday.  Aaron Quesnell and Andy Wilson went 1-2 in the Masters 30+ event.  Anna Lang won both the Women's 1-2-3 and 3-4 events.  Chris, Greg and Andrew Salcedo competed in the severely shortened Pro 1-2 race, with another strong Pro field.  Look for race reports from our winners in the coming days.  It was a great day out for our team.  Congratulations!

2/3

Lundby takes 2nd place at the hilly, and very windy, Boulevard Road Race!  Katharine was able to escape the field with a Bicycle John's rider, but that's all we know!  Look for her report of the day soon.  As for the men, Randall Coxworth used the Masters 35+ race to open up for tomorrow's criterium, and Chris McDonald and Greg Bourque were severely challenged with an NRC caliber field.  Full squads from Health Net, Toyota United, and Team Slipstream were there to keep the race fast!  Several other pro teams and individuals comprised one of the toughest fields ever assembled at Boulevard.  Both riders completed three of four laps before calling it a day.  On to Red Trolley...

News headlines from the month of January have been archived.  The teams take to the hills of the Boulevard Road Race, and the fast lanes of the "Top Gun" course at the Red Trolley Criterium this weekend.  We'll keep you posted on the team's performances.

March News

3/28
This evening several members of the Karl Strauss/SDBC Elite Men's and Women's teams attended the second round of the Del Mar Criterium Series.  For the men, Randall Coxworth sprinted for 3rd place.  For the women, Bonnie Bourque won the race by lapping the field, while Melinda Johnson took 3rd and Kim Paine placed 4th in the field sprint.  Both teams will have a chance for overall victory in the series finale on April 7th.  Congrats to all tonight on another good performance.

3/25
With a full-squad in attendance at this year's Redlands criterium, it was only fitting that the men would put the numbers into the top twenty places on the day.  Chris McDonald worked hard in the only real break of the race, but when it was caught, the team assembled near the font, and pretty much kept together to the line.  As a result, the riders placed 4th (Randall Coxworth), 5th (Andy Wilson), 10th (Nick Onate), 12th (Aaron Quesnell), and 18th (Sammy Dean).  Job well done guys!

For the women, Anna Lang and Katharine Lundby attended the LA Circuit Race, with Anna taking the win, and Katharine placing 3rd.  Congratulations ladies!

3/21
Chris has written his report on the San Dimas Stage Race, which can be read here.

3/20
Lang scores another big result!  In only her second start in an NRC event for Karl Strauss/SDBC, Anna Lang stayed upright, and was able to use her sprinting speed to earn 5th place in the Sequoia Classic Criterium.  Congratulations Anna!  Look for a recount of the Women's event in the near future.

3/20
The final stage of the SDSR treated spectators to a great show.  Because of a front-line starting position (based on his general classification, or GC), Chris McDonald was able to get into a 13-man breakaway that would go the distance...barely.  In the last remaining laps, Jittery Joe's Cesar Grajales escaped for the victory, while McDonald safely sprinted to a fine 7th place.  For his efforts, Chris finished 15th overall in the general classification.  You can read more about the race in an upcoming report.

3/17
Stage II of the SDSR was fast and furious, and while the team maintained position near the front, an ill-timed crash changed the shape of the race for the remaining laps.  At the finish, Greg came in 19th, and Chris finished in 30th.  The general classification changed significantly due to the crash, but Chris only dropped one place to 14th overall.  Tomorrow, the team faces the final stage, a 90-minute criterium around the streets of San Dimas.  We'll have final results and an update of the race by Tuesday.

3/17
Stage one of the San Dimas stage race featured a hill climb time trial of 3.8 miles.  Scott Moninger (BMC) flew up the mountain in a time of 12:56, winning the event by 21 seconds over Ian McKissick (BMC).  For the team, Chris McDonald posted a 13:58, which puts him in 13th place.  The rest of the boys put in solid efforts to prepare for stage two's 70-mile road race.  Stay tuned for more race coverage.

3/14
Some members of the men's and women's team decided to get some speed work tonight at the Del Mar Criterium Series.  The ladies had less than 10 riders in their field, but that didn't stop them from taking four of the first five spots.  Melinda Johnson and Katharine Lundby lapped the field, while Bonnie and Kim set themselves up for a sprint.  All in all, they got a good workout in before heading north to the Quad Knopf Classic in Visalia (NRC).  Randall, Greg, and Sean Watkins participated in the men's event, with Randall getting 2nd, although he had to negotiate around a rider who blew a tire in the final lap, as he tried to catch a rider who had escaped the group.  He and Greg are readying themselves for the San Dimas Stage Race, alongside Andy, Aaron, and Chris.  Good luck to all this weekend.  Stay tuned for race coverage throughout the weekend.

3/11
4 in the top 20 overall at Murrieta.  Today's road race was a hot and windy day at the office.  The boys rode strongly to nullify a break that had escaped them, and then tried to be in every break thereafter.  Despite missing the key move of the day, the team still set up for the sprint for 10th to earn as many points as possible.  For the stage, Randall and Andy placed 11th and 12th in the field, and overall, the team placed 6th (Randall), 9th (Andy), 12th (Aaron), and 19th (Sean).  The team is happy with the overall outcome, but they will be seeking bigger results in the races to come.  Great job guys.  The women played a more calculated race, watching who went up the road, but miscalculated it in the end.  Anna Lang took the field sprint for 9th, with Bonnie in 12th.  Overall, Anna moved into 2nd, while Bonnie slid a few spots to finish 5th.  Good job ladies.

3/10
Off to a good start.  The Karl Strauss/SDBC Women's Elite team placed two riders in the top three at the Tour de Murrieta, with Anna Lang and Bonnie Bourque taking 2nd and 3rd, respectively.  In the men's race, a 12-man break established itself early, and by the race's end, 5 of the original group stayed away for the spoils.  At the finish, Sean Watkins placed 4th, while Randall Coxworth placed 7th from the field sprint, followed by Aaron Quesnell in 11th, and Andy Wilson 12th.  Greg Bourque also scored a few valuable Omnium points in 25th.  Day two of the Tour features a 46 and 60-mile road race for the women and men.  Stay tuned for results from tomorrow's action.

3/4
Today a nearly full men's squad took to the streets of Dominguez Hills for the Deluge 100km criterium.  A slow start gave way to several attacks, and Karl Strauss/SDBC was present in almost every move.  Just before the halfway point, Randall Coxworth created a move that eventually lapped the 60-rider field.  In addition, Nick Onate, Greg Bourque, and Chris McDonald joined a second group that also put a lap on the peloton.  In the end, race winner Ben Brooks (Navigators) escaped the field with one other rider, while the team desperately tried to bring it back.  In the mad dash for third, Randall placed 7th, Chris 12th, while Nick and Greg rounded out the top 17 (number of riders to lap the field).  Four in the top 20 was a good result, and an indication that the form is starting to come among the riders.  Great race guys!

3/2
Hanging out at Acqua al 2.  The majority of the team enjoyed a great happy hour with Martin Gonzalez, owner of Acqua al 2 in San Diego (far left).  Martin is also a contributing sponsor of the Women's elite team.  Thanks for a great evening, Martin.

The men head to Dominguez Hills once again for a 100km criterium, while most of the women will be preparing for Murrieta at home.  Anna Lang will be racing at the NRC event in Merced.  Look for updates on these races in the coming days.

SDBC wins THREE!  Today's El Cajon Criterium (CBR) saw victories from our Karl Strauss/SDBC riders in three categories, Women 1-3 (Anna Lang), Masters 35+ (Randall Coxworth), and the Men's Pro 1-2 event (Nick Onate).  Nick won his first Pro 1-2 race in style, going away solo from a small group that had already lapped the field, and were off the front again.  Andy Wilson rounded out the top three, as he was just edged out for 2nd by a Jelly Belly rider.  Congratulations to all, what a great day of racing!  Look for reports this week.

4/27
Katharine Lundby, winner of the San Diego Omnium, has submitted her account of the racing action of that weekend.  You can read her entry here.

4/24
Chris has submitted a race report on the Conquer the Canyons stage race, which can be read here.

4/23
Over the weekend, the stage race crew (with the addition of Nick) competed in the Conquer the Canyons Stage Race.  The event started well for the team, with Chris McDonald taking 2nd place behind Daniel Ramsey (Successful Living), recent winner of the Sea Otter Classic, in the time trial.  In the afternoon's circuit race, Andy Wilson placed 5th in a mad dash to the line.  Sunday featured a hilly 60-mile road race, with a 3/4 mile climb the riders faced 8 times.  The racing was very aggressive, and in the end, Chris came home in 11th on the stage, and dropped slightly in the standings to finish 5th overall.  Greg Bourque rode a tough race to finish 16th, but managed to move up 31 spots and finish 18th overall.  Stay tuned for a race report later this week.

Lots of updates in the last few days.  Our galleries are filling up nicely with photos.  Check them out here.  Also, Drew has sent in a summary of his race at the Garret Lemire Grand Prix, which can be read here.  This weekend, the men will take to roads of Westlake Village, at the Conquer the Canyons Stage Race.  This will be a new event for our five participants.  Good luck Karl Strauss/SDBC.

4/16 Lundby scores SD Omnium win!  Katharine Lundby, victorious in the road race, and 2nd in the criterium, took top honors in the San Diego Omnium this past weekend.  Congratulations Katharine!  All the results earned by the women's team can be found on the results page.

The men's team were split between the SD Omnium and the Tucson Bicycle Classic over the weekend.  The Tucson crew (Chris, Randall, Andy and Greg), endured long delays, steep climbs, and strong winds at the TBC.  Though only 37 riders started the Pro-1 event, the racing was very aggressive and difficult all weekend long.  Overall, Chris McDonald finished 13th, with Greg Bourque finishing 17th.  In the SD Omnium, Drew Salcedo made it into the winning break, earning 4th place on the day.

Nice work to everyone on a very busy weekend of racing.

Our title sponsor, Karl Strauss, is hosting their annual Beach to Brewery event, which supports the Surfrider Foundation.  Information on the event can be found here.

4/7
The final stage of the Hoehn Del Mar Criterium Series took place today, and 6 of the men's team, coupled with several club riders, were there to protect Randall's second place overall in the series.  The race featured several attacks, but Karl Strauss/SDBC wanted a field sprint, and they set about bringing everything back, and controlling the field in the final 20 minutes.  In the end, Karl Bordine, series leader, just edged out Randall for the win, symbolic of their overall placings as well.  Randall came oh so close to breaking the winless streak, but the team is still very happy with the result.

UPDATED: Bonnie Bourque did emerge victorious in overall series, placing 2nd in the final stage.  Melinda Johnson placed 5th, Kim Paine placed 7th, and Katharine Lundby 10th on the stage as well.  Nice work, ladies.

4/1
Only the women's team and a few of the men raced this weekend, while the rest of the men's team had their first weekend off in some time.  At the Indio Grand Prix Saturday, the ladies faced some very strong competition, with their best placed rider, Bonnie, earning 16th place in the stacked field.

For the boys, Nick and Sammy participated in a shortened Dominguez Hills Criterium (CBR), with Nick placing 6th today out of a shattered field.

Drew Salcedo was the team's sole representative to compete in the Garret Lemire Memorial Grand Prix, placing 4th in the category 2 field.  Nice job, Drew.

Not much to report after two more days of racing.  For the men, Aaron Quesnell was 11th at the Barry Wolfe Grand Prix, as he braved a crazy field sprint, with riders going four abreast into the last corner!  On Monday at the Long Beach CBR Criterium, the men's team missed the early move that lapped the field in under 20 minutes!  The four-man crew finished out the race, getting some good training miles in!

For the women, Bonnie Bourque placed 3rd at the Long Beach CBR Criterium.

5/27
Today the teams participated in the Dana Point Criterium, a new event on the calendar.  It was not a good day for the team, with both Drew Salcedo and Greg Bourque sustaining heavy falls, with Greg breaking his collarbone and bruising his hip.  Drew escaped with just some good road rash.  The racing was very fast and while the team was well represented in the day's action, their results were 14th (Randall Coxworth), and 17th (Andy Wilson).

The women also had a tough day out, trying desperately to bring back a breakaway, but were unable to close the gap.  At the line, Bonnie came home in 8th.  Next up is the Barry Wolfe Grand Prix, followed by the Long Beach Criterium.  Updates to come Tuesday.

5/20
Ontario Results: A 1-2 sweep of the Master's 30+ race (Andy Wilson, earning his first win in a long time, followed by Coxworth, and Nick Onate in 5th), a 2nd place in the Pro 1-3 event after lapping the field with one other rider (McDonald), a 4th place in the women's event at Ontario (Bonnie), as well as 4th place in the Women's race at West LA (Lundby).  These are some of the results earned by the Karl Strauss/SDBC team today at Ontario.  Congratulations to all that participated in a great day of racing!  Look in the results page for all our results to date.

Lundby 3rd in SCNCA Time Trial Championships.  Katharine Lundby rode to a fine finish today in the race of truth, against a strong field.  For the men, Chris McDonald and Randall Coxworth rode very respectable times to place 5th and 7th in the Pro 1-2 category.  Good job everyone.  Tomorrow, the men's team takes to the streets of Ontario, while the women will be attending the West LA Circuit Race or Ontario.  Results to come on Sunday's action.

Lang wins again!  Anna Lang convincingly took the Barrio Logan Grand Prix Women's field sprint to earn her first State Championship!  For the men, in defense of his 2006 championship, Chris McDonald found himself in another successful breakaway, and managed 4th on the day (3rd for the State Criterium results, as race winner Kyle Gritters (Health Net) was ineligible for the championship).  The rest of the men took four more placings in the top 20, with 7th (Randall), 10th (Andy), 11th (Drew), 14th (Aaron), and 19th (Nick).  Look for race reports on this great SDBC-hosted event later in the week.

Quesnell on the Podium!  Today a healthy four-man contingent raced the Paramount Criterium, on a course they know all too well from CBR racing.  With over 100 category Pro 1-3's in the race, the men made every move that mattered, and a late attack by Quesnell saw him latch onto a small group that stayed away with only 3 laps to go!  Karl Bordine of 5 Star Fish followed a last lap attack by Dusan Ganic (Successful Living) to easily take the win, while Aaron nearly closed the gap with his sprint speed for 3rd.  In the field sprint, Drew Salcedo hung onto the wheel of Rahsaan Bahati (Rock and Republic), recent winner of the CSC Invitational, for a fine 5th place.  Nick Onate was 19th on the day as well.  Great job guys!

6/23
Lang takes field sprint for second again!  Different race, same result.  Anna Lang was only bettered by one rider at the Rochester Twilight Criterium, an NRC event.  She has also been busy at the Festival of Speed at T-town in Pennsylvania.  All of Anna's results for the week can be found on the results page here.

Lang second to Van Gilder again!  With victory out of reach, Anna Lang secured another 2nd place by winning the field sprint this past Sunday at the City Bikes RFK Criterium in Washington DC.  Lang is currently racing across the country in Trexlertown, PA on the track, and is on great form at the moment.  Congratulations again Anna!

6/17
Salcedo earns podium place at Glendale.  Rookie elite team member, Drew Salcedo, delivered a long sprint on the new Glendale course to secure 3rd place on the day.  This is Drew's biggest result to day, and he is beginning to show that he can deliver in the Pro 1-2 category.  Congratulations Drew.

6/16

6/11
Onate still on form; Lang wins yet another.  While most of the men's team were sending Andy off to Texas in style in Vegas, the others raced at Ontario.  Nick Onate raced well and sprinted for the win, only to be passed by Rock Racing rider Jeremiah Wiscovitch in the final meters.  For the women, Anna Lang won her event, and the race report, sent in by Bonnie, can be read here.

Katharine Lundby, our sole elite representative at the new SCNCA RR Championships, placed 9th in the heat of Bakersfield.  Congratulations to all on a great weekend of racing.

6/4 Lang on a roll, 2nd place and she earned the CBR State Criterium Championship.  In a race which had just two of our 5 women in attendance, the pair worked well together to set up Anna for win, as well as keep Bonnie Bourque (5th) in third place overall in the Best All-around Rider (BAR) series.  Congratulations ladies.

For the men, a 7-man team, including up and coming strongman James Gunn-Wilkinson, reeled in an early breakaway, then set about covering attacks with Nick, Randall, Aaron and Chris.  A promising move with Nick and Aaron was brought back, and an immediate counterattack had Chris well placed in the 9-man move.  With only half of the 62 miles completed, it was a long day out, but the group stayed away, and Chris McDonald earned 5th place on the day, and  4th place in the State Championship.  Chris also placed 3rd in the SCNCA Championship.  Congratulations on a great day of racing.

Lang wins the day; Onate wins overall!  It was a big day of CBR racing for the team on Sunday, as Anna Lang won her race with a 1km solo pursuit, followed by Bonnie in 4th place.  Next, four of the men used the Masters race for warm-up.  Greg Bourque found himself in a late break that stuck, and sprinted to 4th place.

For the finale, the Men all worked hard for Nick Onate, who was sitting in 2nd overall in the BAR series.  The team kept the race together for the mid-race sprint bonus, with Onate easily taking it from a perfectly choreographed team leadout.  In the end, Drew Salcedo won the field sprint for 7th, with Onate in 9th, which was enough to take the overall series!  Congratulations Nick and everyone on your efforts!

For the final event The boys looked good out there!of the 2007 Road Season, Chris, Randall, Greg and Nick battled the wind at the Fiesta Island TTT, presented by SDBC and B&L bike shop.  The foursome clocked the third fastest time of the day, and finished 2nd in their category.  It was quite a site to see four identical riders, complete with Bianchi TT bikes and Giro helmets!  It was a tough but rewarding way to finish the season for the team.  Nice job.
